Wilmar adopted its No “Deforestation, No Peat & No Exploitation” policy (“Policy”) in Dec 2013 knowing it would be a challenging goal to implement it throughout its extensive supply network which includes several hundred mills and thousands of FFB suppliers. We have commenced the task enthusiastically and have been encouraged by the positive support of many within the industry. The focus on engagement with suppliers extends from corporate dialogue to visits to mills and their FFB suppliers. Where issues are identified, these are discussed with the organisations involved in order to agree corrective actions and timeframes. Details of all such supplier engagements are listed below.
Some companies continue with business-as-usual practices and we welcome communication from any party where this occurs. Our preferred approach is to engage with our suppliers to explain why we have adopted our policy, with the intent to help them implement activities which conform with international standards and market demands. In some cases our input has not been welcomed, and we have reluctantly ceased our relationship with a few suppliers. In other cases, the outcomes have been much more positive leading to companies halting deforestation, and establishing mutually beneficial relationships with local communities. To address ongoing issues which arise in our supply chain we have implemented a grievance policy which can be accessed here.
