New Zealand is one of the world's leading dairy exporters, supplying markets across Asia and beyond. Yet increasingly, growth is being driven not simply by producing more milk, but by creating higher-value dairy products that meet evolving consumer needs.
This shift towards premium nutrition products is one of the reasons Goodman Fielder and Wilmar International have invested more than NZ$100 million over the past three years in expanding dairy manufacturing capabilities at Meadow Fresh's Christchurch site in New Zealand.
In September 2026, the investment reached an important milestone when New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon officially opened the new Meadow Fresh High Value Dairy Centre, a state-of-the-art facility designed to produce innovative ultra-high temperature (UHT) dairy products for both domestic and export markets.
The facility significantly expands Meadow Fresh's capability to manufacture high-value products, including high-protein dairy beverages for growing markets across China and Southeast Asia. Demand for convenient, shelf-stable and protein-rich dairy products continues to grow throughout the region as consumers increasingly seek nutritious products that fit modern lifestyles.
At the heart of the development is a combination of advanced processing technology, research and development capability, ultra-filtration systems and automated warehousing. Together, these investments enable greater product innovation while supporting efficient large-scale manufacturing.
The Christchurch investment includes a state-of-the-art R&D pilot plant for new product development, ultra-filtration technology for high-protein dairy products and an automated pallet racking system.
The Christchurch project forms part of a broader programme of investment by Goodman Fielder and Wilmar International across New Zealand. Over the past five years, approximately NZ$300 million has been invested in manufacturing capability, technology and people to strengthen the company's food and dairy operations.
Beyond increasing production capacity, the High Value Dairy Centre also contributes to regional economic growth. The expansion has created 25 new jobs, bringing the Christchurch dairy workforce to around 280 people. Across Christchurch and Palmerston North, more than 500 employees now support Meadow Fresh's dairy operations, processing over 250 million litres of milk each year.
For Meadow Fresh, which has been part of New Zealand's dairy industry for more than 60 years, the investment represents the next stage in its evolution. By combining New Zealand's strong dairy farming foundations with advanced manufacturing and product innovation, the company is well positioned to capture growing opportunities in premium dairy categories both at home and internationally.
As global consumer preferences continue to evolve, investments like the High Value Dairy Centre demonstrate how food and agribusiness companies can create greater value from agricultural resources while supporting skilled jobs, innovation and long-term export growth.
