Preserving Innocence: Wilmar's Commitment to Protecting Children

Sustainability

In 2021, Wilmar took a monumental step towards safeguarding the innocence of children through the "Sentuhan Selamat, Tidak Selamat" (Good Touch, Bad Touch) initiative. This programme, launched by the Women Working Groups (WoW) across Wilmar's Malaysian oil palm estates, is more than just an educational effort—it's a beacon of hope for countless children who deserve to grow up in a world free from fear and harm. The initiative continues to be taught in schools to this date, ensuring that children are regularly educated and protected from harm.

A Community United for Safety

Understanding the sensitivity of the topic, Wilmar first engaged with the parents of the children in their schools. This step was essential to ensure that parents were aware of the programme and its objectives before it commenced. By involving parents from the outset, Wilmar fostered a supportive environment where children could openly discuss their learnings at home. Parents, often the first line of defense for their children, were encouraged to discuss these important issues openly, fostering an environment of trust and communication.

Learning Through Love and Laughter

The programme was designed to be child-friendly and engaging. Using songs, quizzes, and colorful materials, the sessions were not just informative but also fun. Conducted in local languages and dialects, the initiative ensured that every child could fully understand and participate. Nurul Narieni, Environment, Safety & Health (ESH) Officer at Sapi Plantation, shared her hopes: "We want these children to recognise the signs of abuse and feel confident to speak up. Their safety is our priority."

Voices of Innocence

The initiative also focused on teaching children how to report incidents of sexual abuse. They were educated in the steps to take if they found themselves in such situations.  It helps them understand their bodies, boundaries, and personal space, as well as empowering them to protect themselves from harm.

The training sessions were well-received by the children, who actively participated and interacted during the sessions. Through the use of interactive methods such as quizzes and games, the children absorbed the information more effectively. The Q&A sessions also confirmed that the children now understood the subject at hand. They were more aware of the differences between appropriate and inappropriate interactions. Members of the WoW recalled the enthusiasm and engagement of the young participants. "The children were so interactive, asking questions and participating in quizzes. It was heartwarming to see them understand the difference between safe and unsafe touches," one member said. These sessions were more than just lessons—they were lifelines, equipping children with the knowledge to protect themselves and their peers.

A Promise of Protection

This initiative is a significant step in strengthening the implementation of Wilmar's Child Protection Policy, introduced in 2017. The policy, based on the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), provides a comprehensive framework for the protection, provision, and participation of all children without discrimination. It sets out Wilmar's commitment to protecting all children in its operations and supply chain, including all suppliers and contractors.

The "Good Touch, Bad Touch" initiative aligns with the development of the Malaysian version of the Child Protection Implementation Manual, created in partnership with the international non-profit organisations, BSR and Earthworm Foundation. This manual provides specific context for implementing Wilmar's Child Protection Policy in Malaysia, building on the original manual published in 2020 for Indonesia.

A Brighter, Safer Future

Through the "Good Touch, Bad Touch" initiative, Wilmar is not just educating children about sexual abuse and safety; it is sowing the seeds of a brighter, safer future. By empowering children with knowledge and involving parents and communities, we hope to build a world where every child can grow up free from fear and harm.

Wilmar’s commitment to child protection extends beyond this initiative. We have a comprehensive range of policies and programmes designed to safeguard children, which are communicated to a wide array of stakeholders, including our suppliers. By ensuring that everyone in our supply chain understands and adheres to these standards, we are creating a united front in the fight for children’s safety. Together, we can build a safer, more nurturing environment for every child, ensuring that their rights and well-being are always prioritised.
